One of the most important elements in business is a vision. Vision can be communicated in various ways. One way would be to create a positive work environment with high wages and other incentives that would make employees more productive. However, vision can also be communicated in negative ways. For example, at Amazon.com the vision of the founder, Jeff Bezos, is to create a large, online store that provides products with low prices, and Bezos communicates his vision via the working environment that he has set since he founded Amazon.com. Amazon.com’s vision is to attract customers who not only want to shop but also to find products that are good and relatively cheap compared to other retailers’ products. Therefore, with this vision, Amazon.com creates its strategy and plans how to lower its prices.
The working environment is shaped toward the vision of Amazon.com’s founder. During the first day, Amazon.com employees get backpacks and tools that they need for their work based on their departments. When they decide to leave the company, they return all of the tools that Amazon.com gave them on the first day. Additionally, all employees must pay for parking at the Amazon.com office. Employees also have tight working hours, and the wages that they receive do not reflect the heavy workload that they endure. This working environment is the way that Bezos communicates to Amazon.com employees at the office and warehouse that Amazon.com’s goal is provided low prices to its customers. In order to accomplish that vision, Bezos communicates by providing a combative working environment that will support his company’s vision.
Vision and communication are correlated. Vision is important for companies to succeed. Bezos’s vision is to provide products to customers at low prices, so the founder communicates with Amazon.com employees via setting up a restrictive working environment.
