Jeff Bezos the founder of Amazon.com creates a combative environment during board meetings. He allows harsh statements during the meetings because he wants the board to be honest about the situation and then try to form a strategy to overcome problems. Often, this environment creates conflict among the board members and Bezos. One major element in the conflict is ethnic background. Most conflict in society occurs because of ethnicity (Wolff, 2007), and this also happens at Amazon.com.
Ethnicity has raised many conflicts at Amazon.com, especially between Amazon.com board and warehouse employees. Every individual has a different background like ethnicity as well as education, and not all of the board members can adapt to Bezos’s style. Bezos grew up with science. He took physics courses in high school and at Princeton University, and he always dealt with logic. This education influenced his mindset to be very logical when communicating with people. However, John Rossman as former of Amazon.com board member stated that some Amazon.com warehouse employees do not have the same background as Bezos. Therefore, some of them leave Amazon.com because they are not used to Bezos’s operation style in which Bezos makes everyone works like robots to meet Amazon.com's target. For some people, this act can be perceived as humiliation.
The conflict at Amazon.com is rooted in ethnic differences Thus; it is very difficult for some individuals at Amazon.com to stay because they do not fit in with Bezos’s style. Ethnic differences play a crucial role in conflict; therefore, understanding ethnic differences is part of the crucial step to intervene in conflicts.
